The talk will cover the different types of grounds, imprimaturas, mediums, pigments and layering techniques used by Renaissance painters , (with an emphasis on Van Eycks work, and painters of the Italian Renaissance), and Baroque painters like Rembrandt, all of which provides the basis for the French Academic methods used in the 19th century and Contemporary classical techniques.

MATERIALS AND PAINTING TECHNIQUES OF THE OLD MASTERS
In this course students will select one of the following 4 Old Masters to work from: Carravagio, Vermeer, Raphael or Ingres. Methods of painting from the tenebrist technique to the that of the 19th century French academic painters will be taught depending on which picture is chosen. Students will learn how to make a faithful copy of an old master painting starting with the ground layers to the final subtle glazes. They will also learn the importance of values in composition and colour, how to handle edges, and the relationship between light and form.
WORKSHOP DATES : APRIL 18 - JUNE 6, 2013, (7:00-10:00 PM, THURSDAY EVENING FOR 8 WEEKS)

PORTRAIT PAINTING USING OLD MASTER TECHNIQUES

The typical method of painting in layers, starting with a dry brush sketch to the
final layer of glazes which create subtle and translucent skin tones will be covered. Also students will learn about lighting, how to set up a palette, the importance of values, edges, colour and modelling of form.
Duration: 4 days, Nov. 5, 12, 19 & 26, 10:00am-5:00pm, (1 hr lunch)
Cost: $500.

ALLA PRIMA PORTRAIT PAINTING IN OILS - USING PHOTOGRAPHS (to be offered 2018)

Alla Prima is a method of painting in which paint layers are laid one into another ("wet into wet") in a single session, as opposed to building up successive paint layers with each layer needing to dry before the next is applied.
In this workshop the alla prima portrait will be approached in 3 stages, starting with a monotone block-in, then a mass colour lay-in, followed by the final development of form, where shapes, values and edge relationships and highlights will be covered.
Duration: 1 day, (weekend or week day to be discussed), 10:00am-5:00pm, (1 hr lunch)
Cost: $140.0

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE PAINTING IN OILS

Plein Air translated from French means "in the open air", so plein air landscape painting is painting outside directly from nature.
This course will start in the studio, with a step by step demonstration by the instructor as the students follow along on their own paintings, and then the afternoon will be spent outdoors painting the landscape and practising the basic steps learned in the studio.
Duration: 1 day, Oct 22, 10:00am-5:00pm, (1hr lunch)
